(Emporda, Catalunya) Sota Els Angels - Arketipo 2015
Primarily Carignan with a splash of Syrah and Merlot, this is the estate's top bottling. The wine spends one year in old barrels and three years resting in bottle prior to release. It is lean in body and so fresh, yet infused with such a subtle complexity, a lovely bouquet of herbs and soft black fruits. A gorgeous wine. Sota Els Angels is a small biodynamic winery in Spain's Northeast run by Maria & Guy, a couple firmly rooted in respectful farming and making wines of pleasure and drinkability.
(Ribeira Sacra, Galicia) Silice Viticultores - Tinto 2018
From perhaps our current favourite wine region in Spain, this Mencia is a real charmer. Lightly extracted, wildly floral, notes of geraniums, rose petals, alongside bright red fruits and a mild savoury and mineral edge. Some people call Mencia Spain's 'Pinot Noir,' and it's easy to see why in this stunning wine. Silice Viticultores is a collaboration between three friends who sought to unite old parcels in the canyons of the mythical Sil river. Extreme viticulture, jaw-dropping landscapes, and fanatical dedication yield some of Spain's most exciting wines.
(Priorat, Catalunya) Lectores Vini - Priorat Classic 2018
All the dark fruits and complexity that make Priorat one of Spain's premier wine regions, but without the excessive use of oak, the eye-watering alcohol levels, or the overblown styles that can sometimes be made here. Instead, we have a fascinating wine of freshness but that doesn't lose the structure that is to be expected from this hot and arid climate. The nose on this is bliss... Black cherries, rhubarb, crunchy red fruits and sweet spices. Lectores Vini is a collaborative project between Fredi Torres and Marc Lecha, seeking to showcase pure expressions of the Montsant region along with Priorat and Conca de Barbera, all located in Catalunya.
