Joiseph - Altenberg 2017
The Altenberg is a specific site in the village of Jois, Burgenland. It sits on the east slope of the hill that is represented on the front labels of all their wines. Here is the soils are loamy and stony but on a foundation of limestone. The grapes in this vineyard are all Grüner Veltliner, and they are made as this single-parcel wine only in the best vintages. So far, this 2017 is still the only time the conditions have allowed for this wine to be made. It was aged in old barrels for nearly two years and only 900 bottles were made. As for the wine itself, it is tense, layered, powerful but beautifully balanced and strikingly fresh. This is serious stuff.
Joiseph is a collaboration between three friends that started with the 2015 vintage and has grown from a tiny hectare to nearly five hectares. The wines across the range are distinct, wildly exciting, and full of energy.
