(Penedes, Spain) Entre Vinyes - Oniric Brisat 2019
The perfect 'gateway' orange wine. Part fermented on its skins for 14 days, this old-vine Xarel-lo/ Parellada blend then spent 8 months in clay amphoras as well as steel tanks. It's very light in colour, low alcohol, crisp and fresh yet so soft and drinkable. Lovely fruity aromatic with a slight saline component. Perfect on its own or with a variety of foods. Made by Maria & Pep, a couple who started from scratch in 2012 after taking over some old vineyards, and have slowly built this project into the successful and experimental winery it is today.
(Goriška Brda, Slovenia) Atelier Kramar - Primario 2018
Whilst the other two wines in this selection are more fruit-driven, this one is more saline and savoury. A Rebula from Slovenia, this is a 'proper' orange with concentration as well as some structure (lovely fine tannins). It has a fascinating salty/caramelised finish. Perfect with spicy foods, white meats, or root vegetables. Made by former artists Katja and Matjaz, who built their dream atelier in the picturesque Brda region and eventually fell into winemaking full time. Wines rooted in local tradition but with a modern expression and real elegance.
(Mosel, Germany) Staffelter Hof - Müller Time 'Sandersstruck' 2019
The sort of orange wine you can drink all day. Made from Müller Thurgau, it's lean, has hardly any tannins, is soft but crisp at the same time, and just ridiculously quaffable with a slight 'spritz'. An all-weather joy that will work wonders with most foods or as the perfect aperitif. Made by Jan Klein, the latest generation at the helm on this historical estate which has been in the family since 1805, but operating as a winery since 862...! Jan started to produce a special range of wines with no added sulphites in 2014, a range that has now expanded to nearly ten singular wines.
